Mason's Yard
The yard is tucked away through a narrow covered entrance off Duke Street St James's. A mixture of fine 18th century brick buildings and contemporary design of the White Cube gallery. It was named after Mason the grocer (as in Fortune and Matrons) not the adjacent Masonic lodge. It was the epicentre of 1960's swinging London with photographers galleries and night clubs. Scotch of St James's was at 13. Hendricks played there when he first came to London. Next door was where John Lennon is reputed to have met Yoko Ono. And Gered Mankowitz had his studio here where he photographed the Stones, Hendricks and many others.
The yard still has a good feeling but not the edginess it had then... Hartnoll describes himself as an artmonger.
Not sure how much I will be able to blip over the next few days. I am going to stay in a tipi in a Dutch forest over the long weekend and I can't count on internet - maybe not even electricity (I am packing thermals...!)
