The Finale
Lots of packing and house tidying this morning then up to the town for a walk, a bit of shopping, and some lunch before setting off for home.
As usual the path led me to the railway station for one last look. I think Aviemore Station is quite special as railway stations go. It was opened in 1898 to a design by the architect William Roberts and replacing the original 1863 building. In 1998 the station was restored and refurbished, and the Strathspey Railway was given use of the island platform which was restored, having been derelict for many years.
While taking pictures on the main platform a train, pulled by a diesel engine, drew in on the Strathspey line and caught my attention.
The Royal Scotsman is a Scottish luxury cruise train run by Orient Express. It comprises nine cars; two dining cars, five state cars, one crew car, and one observation car. It carries 38 passengers and has a crew of 30. Prices start at £2,350 per person for a 2-night Highland tour.
This picture shows the observation coach pulling out of the station.
In the 1960s I toured Scotland by rail, with my parents, on various different Observation Coaches and I immediately recognised this as one of them. What a thrill to see it again and remember a happy childhood holiday.
