Rushing outside at the end of the day
The day was coming to an end, I needed to water the tomatoes in the greenhouse and bring the laundry in, I was in the middle of the washing up, and I hadn't taken any photos. I looked around for inspiration. It had been a very grey and overcast day, but through the trees at the side of the garden I could see some good clouds above the skyline and a hint of sun on the hillside. I took my little compact camera and went out to the road, for a clearer view across the valley. The light was lovely - long, evening shadows on the fields with their newly revived hints of green, patches of golden light, subtle evening colour in the sky, those interesting clouds... and sunlight shining on the power cables. I know any serious photographer would edit them out, would have Photoshop or similar, would know how. One day, maybe, that will be me; but they are there, they are real, and it's still a lovely view to live with. Next time, I'll take the SLR and control the focus and depth of field, so that the version where I frame the skyline between the hawthorn berries and the silhouetted sycamore branches, thus largely hiding the power cables, has the view in focus rather than the foreground leaves.
