Cleaning up
For the last couple of years I have suffered from black spot on some of my apple trees. This year I treated them with Bordeaux mixture and I have had virtually no black spot. Unfortunately this year all the trees are suffering from something that makes the fruit go rotten whilst still on the tree. Mrs. Google says its Brown Rot and the only way to prevent it is to ensure all diseased fruit is removed and buried or sent to the tip (if they will take them).
I spent the morning clearing up the orchard and had three wheelbarrow loads of apples, mostly from the ground but also some from the trees where I could see they were going bad. I took them to the vacant plot next door and dumped them, hopefully far enough away from my trees.
I will have to do this a couple more times this year and, sometime during the winter, clean up under the trees, probably a grass rake will do the job, to get rid of any remaining fruit, leaves and other debris that could house the fungus to prevent reinfection.
Not all the fruit was rotten, I ate apples from various trees and it is amazing the difference in taste between them. Currently I think I might have sampled too many apples but I am sure I will feel better soon
