Started a week long Cathedral tour

Today we went to both Winchester and Salisbury, they are about an hour apart so not too difficult.
They were very different buildings, Winchester was old, sparsly decorated Norman style whilst Salisbury was far more flamboyant with statues all over, inside and out, many in full colour.

They both had specific points of interest.

Salisbury have one of only four original remaining Magna Carta's. It is just one sheet of very small handwriting. The guide said its believed that the other three were written by the medieval equivalent of clerks whilst their one was written by someone more artistic as the writing is far better constructed. It also contains abbreviations and uses initials instead of full words , 12th century's version of LOL

Winchester has a cript that floods most winters so little can be kept down there. However they do have a statue by Anthony Gormley of a man holding a bowl (or maybe a mobile phone). I can not say why but it causes quite an emotional effect. When the cript is flooded the status just stands in the water, surrounded by his reflections.
Winchester also was the home of Jane Austins memorial, the subject of my blip. With all the stunning architecture and ancient items on display it was these simple and heart felt group of notes that attracted me the most
