Diary of an Edinburgher

LECCE DAY FIVE

We went for breakfast to our cafe, and this time I ignored the healthy frutta e yogurt and had the pancakes. EPIC! Today we met an American woman who had a tiny wee dog , a ‘teacup’ Yorkshire terrier, and we had a chat with her and a pat of the dog. Kala (named after Kalamata olives) the dog was a ‘service dog’ as the owner had mobility issues. If she fell the dog was trained to ring a certain phone number and bring her pain killers. She was living in Lecce for the winter.

We then went to our meeting place to get the taxi for today’s trip. One of the Old City gates is right near us, so it’s very handy - taxis can’t come into the old city. Today we had two people from Canada, two from Peru and one from Columbia. But these taxi vans are not the best - that’s three we’ve been in and the seat belts don’t work. JR went along to the Tourist Info office to mention this observation. We didn’t break down today, but every time we whizzed round a roundabout or sharp corner, there was an unnerving CLUNK under the back seat. Also, the driver was using his mobile phone the whole time!!

Today was very windy, so it might have been better to go to the other coast, but no worries, we weren’t going swimming, though the two Canadians did. We went to a couple of fishing villages, a couple of beaches, and then some caves. Actually, the caves were quite dangerous - I didn’t go too near them - spot JR.

We were back by 2.30, and the driver, who spoke no English, had to take another tour in the afternoon.

I had a bit of a relax in the flat, JR went for a walk, then later we went out for a meal. The place was absolutely mobbed - I don’t know if Sunday nights are even busier than usual, or we were a bit later, it was like eating a meal in a railway concourse. We had pasta at the cafe we’d been before, and it was very filling.

Tomorrow’s weather looks like showers, 25°, so we might just try to walk as far as the park. Sadly, our breakfast cafe is closed tomorrow.
