Innocent Railway Tunnel

It was a miserable run out to and through the Innocent Railway Tunnel.  It varied between heavy rain and constant drizzle with a breeze but it was too warm for my waterproof jacket that was tied around my waist!

The 500+ metre tunnel was the first railway tunnel in Scotland.  It was part of the Edinburgh and Dalkeith railway line that opened in 1831 to get coal into Edinburgh more easily.  It was originally a horse drawn tramway which is where the name "the innocent railway" came from apparently.  It was seen to be safer.  Although some say the name came from the saftey record itself.  It converted to steam locomotives in 1845.

We had our third play in the Play, A Pie and Pint season at lunchtime, "He Who Opens the Door".
