Great Smoky Mountain Railroad
Had a 4 hour leisurely ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The main engine was powered by steam. Our Pullman car was built in 1923 and was one of Pullmans original “coach” cars. Very well maintained and comfortable. From Bryson City we traveled along the Tuckaseegee River then along lower Fontana Lake to the Nantahala River. We came to a stopping point where we reversed direction…powered by the rear diesel engine.
After a stop for lunch break by the river we continued back to Bryson City.
The mountain man Tim, the storyteller kept us entertained along the way. We had several conversations with him about his love for the forest. He does research and then hikes to find the old home places that were abandoned in what is now Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It was a joy to talk with him. We might have been a little greedy with his time!
One thing he told us was the little White House in the collage was built in 1868 and when the railroad bought the land later they struck a deal to keep the house and some acreage as an historic site. It is the oldest surviving house in this county.
I love little bits of history.
The photo opportunities were limited to what side of the train we had. I was hoping for more fall color but it was very scattered. Lots of blue sky though and perfect weather!
It was a good day of being lazy on a train! Tomorrow we may hike at a new location.
