Another day, another theatre
This morning we visited the ancient city of Hierapolis; ancient, but a bit more up to date than previous days as this was a Roman city rather than Hellenistic. A large city with extensive ruins but mostly it was quiet until we got to the area near the theatre and spa pools at the top of the white hill I blipped yesterday. This area was full of tourists from countless coaches who were there to paddle in the waters and see the theatre and had little interest in anything else.
A tiring morning but theoretically we had a free afternoon, but our guide had arranged an optional excursion to the ruins of another Roman city, Laodiceia, which was not far away. She told us there was a temple to see and on that basis I almost didn't bother, but actually it was another amazing site with a beautifully restored Christian church, some superb wall paintings and lots of other remains. The site is in the early stages of excavation so there will no doubt be lots more to see in years to come. And once again, we were almost the only ones there.
Just time to shower and change now before dinner, then tomorrow we move on to spend our last three nights in a different area nearer the Aegean coast.
