Very Unusual Gathering

At first glance I thought these were geese but on closer observation I was so surprised to see that they're Mallards -- about 30 or 40 of them.  I've never seen them gather in such a large group.  I checked my bird book and learned that it's courting season so perhaps that's the explanation for the large gathering.
