Crossbill
If blipfoto allowed videos I would be posting two of the juvenile wolves playing rough and tumble. It was taken with my phone and a telescope, I’ve included a still image as an extra. They played around for almost an hour and then disappeared into the brushwood. The concentration required to keep them in focus was intense.
Reluctantly we left for coffee and tortilla around 10.30; returning to the vehicle Tino spotted a tibia bone from a red deer that had been snapped in one go by a wolf’s jaw, it has a classic slanted appearance, the second extra.
We left for the pine forest around Aguilar de Campoo where we saw this fine crossbill, several red squirrels and a firecrest which I missed. Tino set up an early supper/late lunch and in the afternoon sunshine we feasted on Gazpacho, fried courgettes, chicken fillets and the juiciest of melons.
With a final scanning of the grass meadows for wild cats we headed towards Santander for the group flight back to Stanstead. Catriona, Liam and I are staying in the city until Sunday when we can fly to Edinburgh.
