Sally Mair - Loving life

Water of Leith

Today was busy! I finished pruning the wall roses and did some others too! I was very pleased to get everything into the garden waste bin as it is collected tomorrow. I swept up the mess.... winter jasmine leaves so much mess when it's cut, leaves everywhere!
Job done I went back in and decided it was a good time to get the Christmas cake finished. I was very pleased to see and tremendous how much I appreciated all my helpers....
The baking parchment sold in strip rather than sheet form.
The brown paper for going around the cake tin while it is baking
The string to tie around said paper
(both of which I was pleased to find I'd kept from last year.)
I had 30 minutes to kill once the cake was in the oven before I had to go out and took advantage of the fine weather to pop into the garden. I picked over 350g of raspberries, lovely big red berries and lots more to come. I also picked 450g of runner beans which seem to be lasting well too.
Next stop was the doctors to try a different nasal spray to try to dry up my secretions(polite word). I was early, as ever, so had a relaxing wander along the Water of Leith. The goosanders were out in force along with some mallards and a visiting pair of swans. The heron was keeping its beady eye on me, on the other side of the bridge. It's such a lovely place to while away some time and very relaxing, lots of people were enjoying watching the birds. One man said he'd spent 20 mins watching the Kingfisher just 10 minutes down river. I've still never seen it.
Back home and the cake is out of the oven and looking good.
Quiz night on tv tonight, whoever on earth thought we'd prefer rugby league last night?
