Clock Tower
Today's the day ......................... to keep your fingers crossed
It was a very pleasant sunny morning in the little town of Castle Douglas today. This is the Clock Tower at the bottom end of the High Street, built in 1934 -35 and a listed Category C building. It was designed by the architect William Forrest Valentine (1885-1957) and stands on the site of the town's original Town Hall.
It's actually the third tower to be constructed here. The first tower, built by Sir William Douglas, was destroyed by fire in 1892 as did a second clock tower forty years later. There's a plaque on the wall of this one that says that ' ........in May 1935, Henry J. Hewat of Paterson, New Jersey, USA, donated the clock tower to the town'.
Fingers crossed it will be, third time lucky ………………….!
