Every one counts
For 80 years this little corner of the wall of the library was where the names of the local men lost in the wars were recorded. There was no visible memorial - the memorial decided upon by a vote after the first war was the chimes of the church clock.
Then in 2000 we got a solid, stone memorial on the church green and the bronze plate with the names on was moved from here and put on the new memorial. Leaving a space here.
So we have a very unusual memorial to a local man who received the George Cross posthumously for saving a nearby town from being blown up when a munitions train caught fire - as you can read on it.
As a civilian, James Nightall was not originally on the memorial but his name was later added - so this one is an ‘extra’
