We had intended to do a self-guided walk from Whitechapel this morning, but got sidetracked by the market in Petticoat Lane. To see clothes prices starting at £1 and ‘design samples’ for the princely sum of £15 was quite something! One of the traders had his radio on and we heard Big Ben strike 11 so we stood to observe the Silence. From there we walked for just a few minutes to Spitalfields Market, where the goods on offer were very different! Then it was onto the 3rd market of the morning, at Brick Lane, very different from the other two. I’d been trying some Street photography while walking around the markets and this was my most successful attempt.
In the afternoon, we went to the Victoria & Albert Museum to see an exhibition of Maurice Broomfield’s industrial photography, which was brilliant - I treated myself to the accompanying book. Afterwards, we wandered through Hyde Park and past the Cenotaph where we paused for a few minutes. It was getting dark by then so we’ll go back tomorrow to have a good look at the wreaths.
Then we walked to Westminster Pier and got a river boat to Greenwich for a meal. Finally we took a bus to the O2 and 1 stop on the Jubilee Line to get back to the hotel.
Almost 10 miles walked today.
