Bohemia
Today we thank iaint for this picture taken in Mariánské Lázně in West Bohemia. iaint explains:
'One of my ex-partner’s grandmothers was among the ethnic Germans - “Sudeten Germans" (Sudetendeutsche) according to Nazi German leaders and Deutschböhmen (“German Bohemians”) before that - expelled from that part of Czechoslovakia (as it then was) at the end of World War II. As a refugee she was re-settled just across the border in Bavaria. About 2.4 million people were expelled at that time.
Mariánské Lázně was (and still is) known as Marienbad to German speakers. It is a spa town with a population of 12,000 people these days. It is close to the border with Germany, and its fortunes were revived when the nearby Iron Curtain fell in 1989. Much renovation has taken place, and the photo is a typical scene.
It is part of the territory refereed to as Sudetenland, the annexation of which by Nazi Germany was a a critical factor in the lead-up to the start of World War II.'
Lorna Lloyd mentions Bohemia in her Diary of the war once, on 20th September 1939 in the diary entry that we blipped on 20th September 2019. This features in Episode 2 of our podcast series of the Diary of the war, starring Lorna's great-great niece actress Bethany Ray as her great-great aunt.
There are still many other locations for us to blip here. If you have a photograph(s) of any of the places listed below (that you have not blipped already), please do send it(them) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk and we will feature it(them) alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. We will also add your name to our blipper credits list below. Thank you!
