Wet, wet, wet...

A very wet squirrel, visiting the garden to sample a real last resort in the squirrel diet: unripe figs from the top of our tree. They're sappy and nasty, and I don't think that even a hungry squirrel can finish a whole one.

Careful observation has reassured me that our 'squirrel-proof' bird feeder does actually work: it's weight-sensitive, and the seed compartment is closed off when anything heavier than a small bird tries to access it.  So perhaps that will help to keep the number of opportunistic  visitors down.

The other day I watched a squirrel and a magpie chase each other madly around the garden, as if competing for some tasty food item.  There are fermenting windfall quinces on the ground: maybe that was it... anything to raise the spirits on a wet November day...
