Two great botanists

I photographed Banksia solandri in the Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Its natural home is in the Stirling Ranges in Western Australia, 4,000 km away, but it is growing well in the new Banksia Garden in Canberra.

I really like the fact that the botanic name of this plant commemorates two great botanists; Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Both sailed with Captain Cook on his first Pacific Ocean voyage in 1768-71, during which he sighted and mapped the east coast of the continent that was later called Australia. Banks' name is given to the genus of plants in the Proteceae family and many other individual species. Solander, a scientifically-trained Swedish botanist who spent most of his professional life in England, is less well known but highly significant. It's so nice to see both their names combined in this species.
