Kitulo
We were lured to Kitulo National Park by its uniqueness (established largely to protect botanical diversity) and its seldom visited-ness. It’s small as protected areas go, but was almost devoid of human activity except for the occasional bell of a goat herd and distant chainsaw in action on the lower slopes, outside of the boundary. We enjoyed seeing buzzards perched looking for prey, and pairs of reedbuck darting from our noise.
We had a great guide, Jafari, to take us along Matamba Ridge, during which he pointed out interesting plant species and stopped at the best views. On the descent it started pelting it down, which is good news for Tanzania’s rainy season, especially in this fertile region, but bad news for our bodies. We were shivering uncontrollably when wet as the altitude made us very cold, and spent the long car ride back and the evening trying to get warm again. Kitulo highly recommended, with a good rain jacket…
