High Museum of Art

Tuesday 22 November
Jen was working today, and Jason was also busy and at the university in the afternoon, so we were on our own for the day. We had a bit of a late start, but then after breakfast we took ourselves off to the High Museum of Art. Besides the regular displays, they had a special exhibition featuring works by The French sculptor Rodin. As you can see, it is a modern contemporary building. It forms part of the Woodruff Arts center, which also houses the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theater. Robert W. Woodruff was an American businessman and Philanthropist, who served as the president of the Coca Cola Company from 1923 to 1985, and eventually became the architect of Coke’s world wide expansio. The Rodin exhibition included several of his well known works such as the Thinker, the Kiss and Monument to Balzac as well as some other less familiar works. The museum also has a pretty good selection of European Art, particularly French, including Monet, Sisly, Pissarro, Boudin and Daubigny. After a sandwich in the cafe, we then went for a walk around the outside of the Woodruff Arts Center and then went on for a walk at a Nature Preserve, suggested by Jen, Blue Heron Nature Preserve. A very enjoyable day.
