Amicalola Falls
Friday 25 November
Another beautiful day for hiking, though with more cloud cover. Our destination today was Amicalola Falls State Park, about a 90 minute drive north from Jen and Jason’s. It was just the four of us again - Jason isn’t as much into hiking as Jen and the rest of us, and had things to do at home. We parked at the foot of the Falls, and climbed the 425 steps to the top! Fortunately, there were various platforms, where you could stop for a breather and take photos. Amicalola Fallls, at 720 feet are Georgia’s tallest waterfall, and one of the highest cascading falls east of the Mississippi. Nearby is the southernmost point of the Appalachian trail. Amicalola means Tumbling waters in the Cherokee language. Some people were getting extra exercise going up the steps, carrying their dogs! The steps are a metal grid construction, and some dogs didn’t like them! From the top, there was a wonderful extensive view over the surrounding Appalachian mountains. Coming down, we took a longer but more gentle path down.
Step count: 10,780
