Goldfinches gathering to feed

I went back out to the cabin today to watch the birds feeding. The freezing conditions mean that all the garden birds appear to be starving and I've made an effort to increase the amount of food on the ground as well as in the feeders. Some birds can never access the feeders.

I was surprised to see so many goldfinches again as they haven't be present in numbers recently. I think the word was out that there was a good supply of sunflower hearts at the top of the row of houses backing onto The Horns valley.

There is still at least seven inches of snow lying on the ground and it has hardened so that it isn't going to melt quickly.
