Ridge and furrow
It was dry today and surprisingly mild after the freeze of last week. It was beautiful out walking this afternoon and I traversed a field with particular patterns of ridges and troughs created by a system of ploughing know as ridge and furrow. It is also known as rig (or rigg) and furrow in the North East of England and in Scotland. The solitary tree looked so wintry and reminded me as it darkened around 3:45 pm that tomorrow will be the shortest day here in the northern hemisphere. Happy winter solstice.
In the extra, the gentle light fading with a darkening sky.
