Resting

On the way home from work this afternoon, I went to West Norwood cemetery. It was a gloriously sunny day and I was looking for some peace and quiet and solitude. West Norwood cemetery is one of the 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries in London that were built in the Victorian period to accommodate for the high influx of deaths in the ever increasing population. I believe it was even the first, being established sometime in the 1830s. Maybe. I might be lying. Definitely mid 19th century.

Anyway, I happen to love cemeteries. They are a place for reflection, beauty and a quiet respect for the more important things in life. My absolute favourite place in London is the West side of Highgate cemetery, which is also one of the 'Magnificent Seven'. It is the most amazing place I have been here, and will go back again and again. The architecture, the atmosphere, the stories and the volunteer guides make this place my top tourist must see of London. Plus it's only a fiver!
