The Lees

I've always thought that the name for the Lees is pretty weedy. It stems from ON hlið = 'slope' and to just describe this prominent hill as a 'slope' is to my mind unlikely in the extreme.  The small hill to the right has a 'decent' Norse name Burabhal and by comparison is hardly a hill at all.
There are other place-names in the area and two of these to my mind come from ON soðull = 'saddle'. This is a much more likely name for the two Lees - this image shows why a saddle would be an appropriate name.
