Now and then - number 4
I am beginning to get obsessed with this! This photograph shows the current scene of the old post office, previously the site of the railway station, the little grey out building is the old telephone exchange and behind that the railway goods shed, the railway line would have been to the right of the goods shed. The archival image dated from 1963 shows the same scene from roughly the same angle. The railway station building became the post office, but note the small extension to the near end of the current building. I suspect that the higher level of the window cill matches that of the original building as seen in the archival image. This would equate to the level of the railway platform. When I walked round the back of the building it would seem to confirm my suspicion. Isn't it strange how things change and we very quickly forget what the past looked like. In addition to the goods shed and the old telephone exchange the original telegraph pole also seems to have survived.
