Cooks River Aqueduct

The Cooks River flows into Botany Bay not far from where I live. The pictured sewage aqueduct which crosses the river was built in 1895 as part of a reticulated sewage system which spread throughout Sydney and suburbs in the late 19th century. The aim of this system was to prevent sewage from discharging into the harbour and watercourses.

Decorative brick aqueducts such as this one were designed by the NSW Department of Public Works to carry sewage pipes across the Cooks River and its tributaries, and are still in use. The decorative elements highlight a pride in public works and a coalition of aesthetics and function. I'm happy to say that the Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct was heritage listed in1999.

Thanks for hosting Jenny.
