Also, due to the surreptitious nature of my camera work, I had no time to check stuff like focus and exposure. I was probably over-reacting to the huge signs at Manchester Arena saying "No Cameras", and "No Photography", but I felt it was probably best not to be seen with a DSLR, even right at the back and up in the Gods.

Strange that there were no signs saying "No recording the whole concert on your iPhone"!

Many, many people did.
