Plaza Mayor

A combination of trying to distill Madrid into one photo a day with the absolutely rubbish wifi we had in the hotel meant that I thought it best to return home before trying to choose my blips for our brilliant short trip to Madrid.

On Monday the light was brilliant, I took the entire day off (yay), and we covered many kilometres around the centre of Madrid. Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Puerta del Sol, down to the Paseos de Prado where a queue outside the Thyssen museum put us off, through Retiro park, down to Atocha station, up into the much edgier and multicultural Lavapies area where we found some lunch, through La Latina and back to the hotel. The evening perambulation was much shorter, and took us along the main drag to the Puerta del Sol and back again. We ended the evening sitting in a street cafe outside the Opera, making up stories about the chauffeur driven cars and their drivers and passengers.

A great day.

This is a view down through one of the gateways from the hugely impressive Plaza Mayor. The composition appealed to me.
