Not A Very Civil War
Hopton Castle (main and extra) is located in Southern Shropshire and is a romantic ruin. Not really a castle, it is thought to have been a significant fortified Tower House. It was used as a Parliamentary garrison during the English Civil War and was under siege from Royalist troops for many weeks. It shows the scars of battle and in 1644 was taken after heavy bombardment. It is said the captured Parliamentarian troops were promptly murdered and like so many historic ruins the earth around the castle contains the bones and blood and ghosts of a violent past.
Today it was peaceful and calm. Mrs I and I, along with a happy dog spent a pleasing couple of hours walking the boundary and investigating the interior.
And eating lunch and drinking tea.
I wonder if the warring parties of our ancient past ever took a break for tea and chocolate biscuits.
I hope you all had a great weekend and can enjoy a peaceful week ahead.
