Dumbarton Castle and the Clyde
An excellent canon on the walls of Dumbarton Castle. It is perched on a high crag that dominates the entrance to the Clyde. The cannonballs could reach the other side of the river so for many centuries it was the key to this part of Scotland. Indeed it was the capital of Strathclyde in the Middle Ages.
The tide was out at the time of the picture but the buoys that mark the deep current for ships can be clearly seen.
Dumbarton itself has seen better days. There is lot of derelict buildings and land that formerly had industry. Brewing was a big industry. It's one of the places that when the lower Scottish league's football results are read out you think where is that? The football ground is right at the foot of the castle!
