Despite the weather
Today Lesley drove us to Stornoway and we checked into Stornoway B&B again.
The weather today deserves mentioning. It rained all day. It was windy.
Dave, who we met last week, came to take Helena, Nick and I out for the afternoon. It kept raining.
We drove to the Callanish Standing Stones. The sky was solid grey! The stones are about 5000 years old, making them older than Stonehenge.
The café was open and WARM! Hot drinks and scones were consumed.
Then on to see the broch at Dun Carloway. It is the ruined remains of a large, complex roundhouse and is set on a hill. The gusts of wind were challenging, but inside the building there was no wind, despite the lack of a roof. It has a double outer wall which must have aided insulation. See extra.
The restored village of black houses at Gerrannan looks over the sea. Each house originally housed a family with their animals. There was a central hearth and no chimney; the smoke made its way out through the roof. These also have a double outer wall and you can see in my image that the roof was built on top of the inner wall.
The roof was made of turf and reeds, held down with netting and stones.
These houses are now holiday homes!
Finally we visited the beautiful beach at Dailbeag. The rain made photography challenging.
We returned to Stornoway to dry out after a very good trip out, despite the weather!
