Tiny hazel leaves

I've had a vase of hazel twigs on the table for several weeks now. They were prunings, and when I brought them in, they had tiny, firm catkins. These opened over days and weeks into long, fluffy, golden lambs' tails, and tiny star-shaped crimson female flowers appeared on the branches close to the catkins. Now, the catkins are drying and shrivelling, having shed their pollen all over the table, but tiny leaf buds are unfurling into little, serrated leaves less than a centimetre long, though the first ones to open are already growing fast.
