Cul de sac

Still car-less, I walked into Kirkby Lonsdale to borrow my daughter's Izzy's little Peugeot while she was at work.

The high water table means the fields and roads flood pretty quickly in heavy rain, so as well as having to listen out for cars so I could hop out of the road, I had to make sure I was well away from any of the large puddles.

(Actually, that reminds me of one evening when I was at Liverpool Uni. My friend Ash and I were out, on Greenbank Road, I think, and we were stood on the kerb waiting to cross. We were also standing by a large puddle although it was dark and we might not have realised this. A taxi went past and drove through the puddle. For a second we stood facing a wall of water apparently hanging in the air and then we were properly soaked through.)

Just as you walk into Kearstwick, a trench has been dug next to the road, to clear the water away, creating a little artificial stream. You can see it on the bottom right of the photo. Unfortunately at this point the trench ends and the water spills onto the road.

I stood back until a couple of cars had passed, which was just as well; from the amount of water that they threw up, it would have been Liverpool all over again!
