Whitelee Wind Farm

Another Sunday trip around the countryside. On the way back home we stopped at Whitelee Wind Farm Visitors Centre. Opened by the First Minister in 2009 it has become a busy Eco Tourism attraction.

The centre gives access to 90 km of paths for cyclists, ramblers and horse riders. On site are 215 turbines generating 539 megawatts of power.

Until the end of last year it was the largest wind farm in Europe, however one of the guides told us that Romania stole that crown at the end of December when they brought the Fantanele-Cogealac Wind Park on-stream with 240 turbines producing 600 megawatts.

He assured us that Whitelee will be looking to take the crown back, he also added that he did not vote for Romania in the Eurovision contest this year. Wonder why.

Hope to get back here when / if we get some better weather to try and get some better shots of the turbines.
