Waiuta, the town at the top of the South Island’s richest gold mine is now a ghost town.  The mine closed in 1951 and within three months only a few people remained. By 1952 little was left of the town and nature was taking control.

The end of Waiuta was sudden, and unexpected. In 1951 a major cave-in of one mine shaft caused extensive damage. The years following the 1930’s had been difficult with labour shortages during and after World War ll causing production to fall, maintenance had slipped during this time too, war-time tax increased, exchange rate complications, fixed price for gold since 1935 and the union in 1951 demanded a large backdated claim - it was all too much and the owners decided to close the mine.

Panels and photos providing interesting information are scattered around the area. All that remains of the town are a mix of concrete slabs, derelict buildings, chimneys - and the day we visited, lots of very wet long grasses and wild plants!  Misty rain came and went and while we didn’t get to walk around the whole area we made the most of visiting many of the locations. 

The gravel road was narrow, winding its way up through pretty native bush. I’m sure the views from the top of the town would be spectacular on a fine day, but somehow today’s weather was atmospheric and perfect for the remains of the once vibrant community of Waiuta.
