One Street

Not the prettiest picture that I have taken on the Bridgewater. I liked the contrast between the truck on the M56 motorway, which crosses the canal at this point, and the slow moving narrowboat heading towards Runcorn. The development of rail and road was responsible for the demise of the canals.

As you can see the canal splits at this point. The main canal turns to the right and heads to Runcorn where it originally connected with the River Mersey while the other spur connects up with the Trent and Mersey canal. The inspiration of the One Street project combined both images and poetry. Here is the last verse of a poem about another meeting of waters:

Sweet vale of Avoca! how calm could I rest
In thy bosom of shade, with the friends I love best,
Where the storms that we feel in this cold world should cease, 15
And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace.

Thomas Moore (1779-1852)

The local angling club were out in force on the banks of my one street today.
