Obelisk

Today has been a good day, I got a lot of work done this morning and then headed up to Scottish Government for a meeting this afternoon. I had a bit of extra time so I went for a walk in the Old Calton Cemetery, next to St Andrew's House, at lunch time. Despite living here for nearly a decade I'd never been in.

This is a picture of Martyr's Monument from the steps leading up to the cemetery. This obelisk was built in 1844 to commemorate the political martyrs of 1793, who were charged with sedition and transported to Australia for demanding legal and parliamentary reform. It has the following quotation on it, which is a speech by Thomas Muir in the Court of Judiciary on the 30th August 1793.

I have devoted myself to the cause of The People. It is a good cause - it shall ultimately prevail - it shall finally triumph.

After work I met up with Morag, a colleague from my previous job. We had a lovely chat over drinks in Starbucks. It was really nice to see her and I thoroughly enjoyed catching up. She was off sick when I left work so she even brought me a wee pressie :)
