The Last Fish Supper
My Dear Princess and Dear Fellow,
As I may have mentioned, we are on countdown mode here in Paraparaumu. Caro and I are painfully aware that this is our last weekend together for 2 weeks.
Oh what a drama queen you may say. And quite right too. But perhaps I have not sufficiently explained to you simply how attached Caro and I are.
I know we may often seem to lead very different lives. I very rarely go for beauty treatments, she has hardly ever attended one of my all-nerd board game marathons, but still we are close. We each take comfort in the presence of the other and there is hardly ever a day where I don't hug or kiss my lovely wife.
So I'm a bit sad. Is what I am trying to say.
Caro seems more stoic about the whole thing but then at 7pm today she surprised me. Out of the blue she announced we were going for a tootle which is a LATE tootle for us, tootle-wise.
She explained that she had chosen this time specifically so that we could watch the sun go down over the sea.
This made me feel all squishy inside.
It was a beautiful time of day to be out. The sun fell, leaving shadows and highlights over the distant hills and we could make out the South Island in the distance beyond Kāpiti Island.
After having this moment together, I decided that a fish supper was necessary. I was previously thinking it was not as I am pretty damn sure I'll be having at least one in the UK.
But. You know. Eff it. Fish supper.
Caro tootled the long way around to get back home again and we listened to her drivetime mix that I made for her when she got her car. It features the song Cool Change by Little River Band which is a Caro Classic.
And I looked out of the window of her car as darkness fell and tried to remember as much of it as I could before I leave.
Yes, I am a big drama. In two weeks', time I'll be laughing at me too.
S.
