So Close, And Yet So Far

This morning we arrived off the shores of the most remote inhabited island on earth -- Tristan Da Cunha.  We were scheduled to go ashore in the Zodiacs, but unfortunately the swells were too big, and it was deemed too dangerous to attempt a landing.

Instead, we have just weighed anchor and are heading towards Inaccessible Island where we will cruise slowly by in the hopes of spotting some of the rare seabirds which call this lonely archipelago home.  Tomorrow morning we will make a second attempt at Tristan and hope the swells are less "swelly" then!

Here's a collage showing Mr. W watching over the doomed Zodiac efforts, a rather pretty strand of sea kelp, and the supply ship Edinburgh which also arrived here this morning, unloading a car along with some other longed-for items for the inhabitants of this far-flung place.  (Edinburgh only makes three trips a year, so I'm sure this was a very exciting day ashore!)
