Kindertransport memorial
I went to Liverpool Street Station on Friday as the restaurant where I was meeting my daughter for lunch was nearby. I had been to the station before but had not noticed this statue previously of a young girl and boy with their suitcases. It commemorates the thousands of Jewish children who were sent by their parents to the safety of England in the late 1930s. They came under what became known as the Kindertransport - children's transport. Many of these children never saw their parents again. The Labour politician, Alf Dubbs, now Lord Dubbs, was one of those children, which is why he speaks so passionately on this country's current policy of limiting safe entry routes for refugees and asylum seekers.
