105 Years of the Royal Air Force
1st April 1918 the Royal Air Force was formed combining the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.
The uniform was initially made from material that was for the Cossacks, or cavalry, of the Russian Imperial Army but the revolution in 1917 put paid to that so the material was stacked up and cheap. So, it was used to make the first Royal Air Force uniforms, and the colour has not changed since.
I was very proud to serve from 1965 to 1978, Cold War years, and would have signed on for a much longer period if the government of the time hadn't closed pretty much all of our bases East of Suez. I only just managed to squeeze in 18 months in Singapore after my 12 months in Oman. In fact, I closed the communications centre at RAF Seletar, Singapore, as the station closed down in March 1971.
