Stick

I have been tracking the travels of this unusually curvy stick around what we refer to as the 'Spike Walk'. Every time we walk up there it seems to have assumed a new location. I especially liked it when it served as a coat rack for a little girl who was visiting the newt pond. They were just leaving when she remembered her coat and ran back to get it.

The clouds have come in again and more rain is expected later this evening. The weather person always says something to the effect that it isn't expected to be a lot of rain but will be heavier in the North Bay. that would be us. We had debated taking the rain covers off the furniture on the porch but decided to leave it on while checking that there were no mice nesting under there.

John has been watching The Master's golf tournament and I have been studiously avoiding it. I have mixed feelings about golf courses in general, but don't mind watching the game. It seems like such an impossibly difficult game, but these guys make it look easy. However, Augusta National Golf Course stands for everything I hate about the game...an old men's club who only recently started allowing men of color to play there and still don't allow women to participate. They tart up the course with azaleas everywhere that they just planted yesterday and fake birdsong that one begins to recognize as fake after hearing the exact same thing repeated every time there is a shot on television. The announcers comment in hushed tones and refer to various spots on the course as if they were shrines. The winner is awarded a hideously ugly and ill-fitting, much coveted green jacket.

We had a friend who was going to be in Atlanta and applied to walk the course. He was granted permission to do it on a certain day and charged $100 for the privilege. When the big day arrived it was pouring rain and permission was rescinded, but the money was not returned. He seemed to take it in stride but I have boycotted the game ever since....

I spent the day working on Anne's quilt. I feel a certain sense of urgency about getting it done and getting it to her. It is nothing like anything I've ever done, chosen partly because the blocks are all the same and can be mass produced fairly quickly. There is, however a fair amount of hand sewing which can't be mass produced....
