Named

The little beck behind our house has no name.

It branches off from Church Beck at the edge of the village. Through Orton Hall it's pretty much a culvert, originally it had sluice gates, bridges etc and was used to feed the Orchids in Disraeli's greenhouses which were sited where our house and garden now are.
But.
Contours don't lie, originally it must have been a natural beck. Once it passes our back wall (which was the original boundary of the Hall) there's one little bridge and suddenly it's wild again, flowing over gentle shelves of karst, land rising on either side, its where Mother Nature wants a stream to be.
All three of our properties have Curlew in the name. On old maps the wood (now much reduced) is called Curlew Woods, and curlews do indeed frequently call in the air around.
So I've decided that henceforth this lovely little beck shall be known as Curlew Beck.
Now to try and call in some favours at Ordnance Survey...
