Roland
This pub sign at the historic town hall shows Roland with his raised sword, a medieval knight and hero who is said to have lived in the 10th century.
In many towns and cities especially in northern and eastern Germany statues of Roland were erected in the Middle Ages. They can be made from stone or wood and symbolise the municipal privileges such as jurisdiction, market rights and the privilege of coinage. They also demonstrate the pride of the citizens and their commercial competence and success.
The extra shows the Quendlinburg stone Roland that is a fairly small version, the tallest one in Bremen is more than 7 ms high.
