Song Thrush ( Turdus philomelos )
Recently we have been seeing Song Thrushes in the garden. This is very pleasing as the number of Thrushes has halved since the late 60s. Fortunately, since around 2010, there has been an increase in numbers nationwide.
Song Thrushes can be identified from the similar Mistle Thrush by the following points. The brown is warmer in colour Mistles are a greyish brown. The spots are circular as opposed to triangular. I they are in flight Mistles have a light coloured feather each side of the tail. While they aren't migratory they have been shown, by ringing, to crop up on the east coast of Europe from Spain to the far north of Norway.
It is just possible this one is feeding an early brood. Looking closely it has some small worms in its beak. If the food was for itself it would be swallowed immediately.
