Day 1 of NE Trip: Spalding and Lincoln
Im and I set off north, and spent the middle of the day in Spalding. We were heading for the George Boswell Romany Museum, but had a little explore of Spalding town itself, including finding an unexpected aviary in the ornamental gardens of Ayscoughfee Hall.
The Romany Museum was fascinating and offered a wonderful insight into a culture that was previously pretty opaque to me. The museum was started by Gordon Boswell, and is now run by his daughter and widow. They were very welcoming and present (answering questions and telling stories), and the late Gordon Boswell was also present via a video interview, and it was interesting to hear him talk about the collections and how he acquired them. I was surprised that he was glad that non-Romani had taken possession of so many of the wagons and items (for decorative purposes) as they would otherwise have been destroyed when their original owners died, as is the (pragmatic) Romany tradition.

We then drove on to Lincoln for the evening/night.
