Wine-tasting...
...With a difference. Today we had the third wine-tasting of this trip, but rather than sitting with a crowd in an ancient cellar we were walking up the steep south-facing vineyards above Rudesheim with glass in hand, nine of us able to ask questions about the vines all around us. This pic comes fr the moment when our informant retrieved a bottle from among the long grass at the foot of a post and announced that this was our next sample.
You can see some of the vines behind h - they grow up & down the hill instead of across it for two reasons. It would be too dangerous to commit a tractor to such an incline ( it might overturn) and an east-west planting would mean that only the front row got the sun - very important so far north.
The wine, by the way, was wonderful...
