Another Brontë connection
What a change in the weather. However a wet mizzley day in Cornwall seems much warmer than one in Yorkshire.
We made the most of it with a visit to Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance.
It was on our list of places to visit as we wanted to see the Lamorna Colony Pioneers exhibition.
Penlee House was built in 1865 by John Richards Branwell. A wealthy miller, and merchant who was Mayor of Penzance three times. A relative of the Brontës sister’s mother Maria Branwell who was born in Penzance.
The Blip photo shows him sat in the drawing room C1880.
In 1946 The Borough of Penzance ( now PZ Town Council) bought the house and grounds by public subscription creating Penlee Park , Penlee House Gallery and Museum.
The Lamorna colony was formed at the beginning of the 1900s in and around the beautiful valley which leads down to Lamorna Cove. May be the most famous of the painters is John Birch who adopted the name ‘ Lamorna’ in 1895 . I first fell in love with his paintings back in 1956 when I holidayed in Lamorna Cove with my mum and dad.
Among the other famous artists were Laura and Harold Knight and Alfred Munnings.
It was a fabulous exhibition which we certainly enjoyed. One painting we both liked was by Frank Gascoigne Heath.
‘ A Summer Afternoon at Lamorna’ 1924
With Frank’s daughters Aileen and Nancy.
See extra.
Pasties purchased from Lavenders on the way back. Yum!
Not been out since!
