Snakeshead Fritillary ( Fritillaria meleagris )

After a couple of pleasant days weatherwise, today it poured down much of the day.  In a dryish spell, I nipped into the garden and took some shots.  I shot a number of things but I have been taking the Fritillary for quite a while now but each day something else appealed more!  The flowers are going over now so I thought today ought to be the day.

Fritillaries are in the words of the RHS "widely naturalised but probably not native".  The species name meleagris is from the Latin and means spotted like a Guineafowl.  Once common they are now greatly reduced mainly owing to the ploughing of ancient meadows.
